Year 1 is an exciting and important year as children embark on their first full year in Key Stage 1. In St George Class, we celebrate the curiosity, enthusiasm, and creativity that our youngest learners bring to school every day. This year marks a key transition as children move from the Early Years Foundation Stage into more structured learning, while still enjoying a play-based, hands-on approach that inspires discovery and confidence.
In St George, we create a nurturing and safe environment where each child feels valued and supported. Our curriculum focuses on developing foundational skills in reading, writing, and maths, alongside a broad range of subjects including science, art, music, and physical education. Through engaging activities and rich storytelling, children begin to build their independence and develop important social skills like teamwork, communication, and respect for others.
Faith is at the heart of life in St George. Our Catholic ethos encourages children to grow spiritually and morally, learning about the love and teachings of Jesus through daily prayer, worship, and reflection. We encourage kindness, empathy, and a sense of belonging, helping every child to feel part of our school family.
This year is full of wonderful opportunities for children to explore, learn, and develop a lifelong love of learning. We work closely with families to ensure a smooth and joyful start to school life, celebrating each child’s progress and unique talents.
How can parents help their children at home?
In Year 1 we have a focus on phonics (the building blocks of words), and we learn the different sounds needed to be able to read and write. In Year 1 the best thing you can spend time doing with your child is reading. If you can read with them every day, even if it is only for a few minutes, this will make a big difference. We also send home homework which will give you an idea of the different learning we have done through the week.
Our class saint is St George
St. George is the patron saint of England. His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the British flag. St George's emblem was adopted by Richard The Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century. The King's soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.
Saint George is popularly identified with England and English ideals of honour, bravery and gallantry, but actually he wasn’t English at all. Very little is known about the man who became St George.
