St Christopher is where our oldest pupils continue their learning journey as they prepare to transition from primary to secondary school. This mixed Year 5 and Year 6 class is a time of great growth, challenge, and opportunity. We focus on helping children develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to thrive not only in their final years at primary school but also as they move on to the next exciting chapter in their education.

In these crucial years, children build on everything they have learned so far, deepening their understanding across all subjects. Literacy and numeracy skills are further strengthened to ensure they are ready for the demands of secondary school. Beyond academics, St Christopher fosters independence, resilience, and responsibility, helping pupils become confident, motivated learners who take pride in their achievements and understand the importance of perseverance.

The transition to secondary school can feel both exciting and challenging. We work closely with families to support this change by providing guidance on organisation, study skills, and emotional wellbeing. Our focus on teamwork, leadership, and positive behaviour encourages children to develop strong friendships and a supportive community, which helps ease the move to a new environment.

Faith remains at the heart of our class, with continued opportunities for reflection, prayer, and understanding of Catholic values. These help to shape compassionate and thoughtful young people who are ready to make a positive impact in the wider world.

In St Christopher, we are committed to making this final stage of primary education a positive and empowering experience, equipping every child with the tools they need to succeed and flourish in secondary school and beyond.

How can you help your child at home?

As children prepare to move into secondary school, the support they receive at home is more important than ever. This stage is not only about consolidating academic skills but also developing independence, organisation, and resilience—all essential for a smooth transition to secondary education.

One of the most important ways parents can help is by monitoring and managing screen time. While technology can be a great tool for learning and communication, excessive screen use—whether gaming, social media, or streaming—can affect concentration, sleep quality, and overall well-being. Setting clear limits on daily screen use, encouraging screen-free times (especially during homework, meals, and before bedtime), and promoting a healthy balance with offline activities helps children stay focused and ready to learn.

To support the transition to secondary school, parents can help their child develop effective study habits. Creating a quiet, organised space for homework and revision encourages good concentration. Helping your child to break larger tasks into manageable chunks, set realistic goals, and use planners or diaries fosters time management skills. Encourage regular breaks during study sessions to keep their minds fresh and avoid burnout.

Open conversations about secondary school can also ease worries and build confidence. Discuss the new routines, expectations, and opportunities they will encounter, and reassure them that it’s normal to feel both excited and nervous. Attending transition events, meeting teachers, and visiting the school together can make the change feel less daunting.

Alongside academic support, continue to celebrate your child’s efforts and progress, encouraging them to be curious, resilient, and proud of their achievements. By working closely together, we can ensure your child feels prepared, confident, and motivated for the next exciting stage of their learning journey.

St. Christopher

According to legend, Saint Christopher devoted his life to carrying the weak and poor across a river. One night, when he was carrying a child, he felt his burden grow heavier with each step. When questioned, the child declared that he was Christ and that Christopher was thus bearing the weight of the world. The widespread cult of Saint Christopher stemmed largely from the belief that gazing on his image would protect the faithful from storms and other threats in their travels.

Although not fully carved in the round, this figure was probably intended as an independent work to be placed on a console or against a pier. It is executed in a highly expressive and animated style, with the saint looking intensely at his youthful burden, while his hands rest on his hip for support. The drapery sweeps around the figure, mirroring the water swirling around his feet, suggesting the integral relationship between man and nature.
